Design of Manchester United’s new women’s kit sparks sexism row

A plunging neckline on their new women’s shirt has led to English Premier League giants Manchester United being described as “sexist”.
The first shirts unveiled by German manufacturer adidas as part of a massive 10-year deal have been greeted with outrage in some quarters.

The new kit was released with the men’s and women’s shirts placed side by side.
The difference was there for all to see with the women’s version featuring a very low neckline and a different collar.
Social media users jumped at the chance to voice their concerns at the cut of the famous red jersey which adidas won the rights to in a daring NZ$179m bid from sportswear rivals Nike.

In launching the kits, adidas designer Inigo Turner said: “We have been on a real journey in creating these new kits. It is with the iconic kits of the past that we drew our inspiration from.

The English Premier League season opens this weekend with Manchester United playing Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
