Today, Rickkyz.com decided to have a sit out with one of Nigeria's fast rising Artist! Hitting the airwaves with his amazing style and uniqueness both here in the Federal Capital Territory and also in his home town. Benue born King of Indigenous Rap as he is fondly called by his Fans is the next big thing!
Rickky: Can we meet u please?
TICO: Thank you for having me here, my name is Nathaniel Adah Simon popularly known as Tico Oyiadah aka Alogaene…
RICKKY: Alogaene! That is your slogan right? Because it could be heard in almost all your records. Tell us more about it...
TICO: You know the industry have its own standards on who to accept or reject especially for up-coming artist. So, many artist have been here and today, we don't hear them anymore; however this time around, Tico Oyiadah Alogaene which means "We’ve come, we are here to give birth to generations…." (laughs)
RICKKY: Interesting! Nathan seems to be a decent name; why the name Tico Oyiadah?
TICO: Yea! Tico is derived from Nathan. Back then people called me Nat, some called me Natico, while others called me Tico, but Tico was all over the place, a lot of people don’t even know my real name before now. While Adah on the other hand means God or father, and Oyi means son, Adah is my father’s real name, Tico Oyiadah simply means Tico the son of the father or God; anyway you wish to call it.
RICKKY: When did u start music? How has it been like for you so far? Any regrets?
TICO: Music has been part of me right from my childhood but I started studio recordings in 1999 experimenting with different genre of music. It wasn’t easy at all because of the kind of family I am from, there was no support because they don’t like me doing music. Now, its a different story, when they listen to my song on air they tell their friends that’s my kid bro doing his thing…(laughs) yes am doing my thing now mehn…
RICKKY: The 1st time I heard your song with Suspect I was like... Wow! This Bro is killing it, so fast and swift... Despite the fact that I don’t understand the language I still felt it was so on point! What inspired such a collaboration with Suspect?
TICO: (Laughs)... There are things a lot of people don’t understand about music. Myself and Suspect didn’t record that song in the same studio. Suspect dropped the free beat and hook for anyone to jump on it. At first, I was skeptical, because that’s not my kind of flow but thanks to Obakzy who said "Tico you don’t need to select songs before you record, prove to anyone that you can be on any record at anytime" and that is exactly what I did, when suspect heard the song, he so much commented on it; and for now, anything can happen.
RICKKY: Sugar Sugar on 104.5 love FM Abuja plays your song almost every day and people at times call to request for it... How does that make you feel?
TICO: Menh... Bro! All this things na Baba God de do am oo, I feel so excited most especially when people call and drop my lines for me on phone.
LOVE FM Abuja Loving it all! |
RICKKY: I love your smile, hope this smile is real?
TICO: (laughs)... Thank You Bro... I am for real!
RICKKY: Some people said you are proud, what do you have to say about that?
TICO: Hmmm… You know in life it is not good to judge someone from a distance. People who say such simply don’t know me and probably read me from a distance. I am not proud, I am a very simple and understanding guy and a lot of people can testify to it.
RICKKY: Are you married?
TICO: Not yet.. Do I look married?
RICKKY: (laughs)... How do Benue people feel about your style of music back home?
TICO: The people of Benue; Young, Old, Men and Women love my music, and they are so proud to have and see Tico promoting it culture to gain more national/international recognition just like my biggest boss 2face Idibia did. They just don’t listen to my music, they follow up on my lyrics, they pray for me every day...
RICKKY: You are a graduate I believe?
TICO: Yea, I read accounting and we don’t speak English but figures (laughs…..)
RICKKY: How do You marry Music and accounting?
TICO: Music, I was born with it, while Accounting is a qualification I don’t know if you understand?
RICKKY: Perfectly well! Lots of people out there who are watching/reading are willing to be like you, what is your take?
TICO: Yea a lot of people appreciate me like crazy. For instance, I got a call from Someone few weeks ago from my State, wishing to be like me. Some said they will love me to be their boss just like “in the days of Wizkid and Banky” some even sent me their songs to comment on. I get different feeds from people couple of times, that alone makes me believe that I am doing the right thing. Rapping with ones' own dialect is not easy, that is the truth. They can be bigger than me if they believe in their own dreams….
RICKKY: Which artist will you like to work with now if giving the chance?
TICO: I can work with any Artist of any kind or style of music, but I will love to have the likes of 2face, Sarkodie, Cythian Morgan, Phyno and Tiwa Salvage among others, in any of my records.
RICKKY: Amongst your record, which is your favourite, and why?
TICO: Hmmm... Wow! I think my favourite song is hmmmm... Spotlight; because it was a mixtape and my lyrics was clear, clean and simple on the beat. Obakzy recommended we recorded Spotlight in just 15 minute.
RICKKY: Who is Obakzy to you, and why do you call him in almost all your records?
TICO: Obakzy is my manager, brother and a friend who believes so much in me, he knows what to tell me in terms of recordings which usually motivates me. Obakzy nke modu! (laughs)...
RICKKY: We believe you compose all your songs. Which of the song took you time?
TICO: When they said hard work pays and good things last I believe in that phrase because my hit track Ekokungae took me roughly four months to compose, but we used just two hours to make the beat and record. That was in 2010... People are still calling and requesting for that song daily because of the lyrics that is so spiritually filled.
RICKKY: I'm sure your fans will be willing to know how soon your Videos and Album will be in the market....
TICO: You know I have been in the music room for years now. I am well informed on what it takes for a music video to be shown and promoted in most musical chart shows. First, they will like to know the director no matter how clean the video is and also he must have a trade mark because their influence matters a lot to an upcoming Artist. By the grace of God am still working hard to drop video that will define Tico soon and I am gonna shoot the video before my album drops. The studio album of mine which comprises of 18 tracks with roughly 9 features. I think I am the definition of hip hop in another dimension. (Laugh)
RICKKY: Wow! Remember you heard/read it here first! We can't wait to have it. So, how many producers are you working with right now for your 1st Studio Album?
TICO: Nawa o! Wuna wan know everything shaa... You know in terms of production you can call almost all Artist prostitute, because they don’t seat their ass in one place. Yes, I have worked with a lots of producers and I am still working. I have the likes of Papii J and Zdon in lagos, Kay Z and C.C are right here with me, and Double G one of my best producer in Benue for now (but he can be funny at times sha)... he’s so good. All this producers knows Tico’s taste, and my Album is going to be produced and recorded by them all (smiles)
RICKKY: With the kind of healthy competition going on right now in the industry; Who do you see as a threat?
TICO: Hmmm… When you say threat it scares me, honestly! I see no one because am just doing my thing unless am seen to some Artist as threat. I have been doing my thing before Phyno and Olamide blew! Pitching me with them right now will definitely reveal a lot as regards what I'm capable of. I'm sure I will make them better (laughs...). I respect Phyno and Olamide so much, because is not easy to get to that place they find themselves right now,
RICKKY: Quickly! Who are those artists you look up to?
TICO: Frankly, I have a lot of Artists I so much admire. When you listen to my lyrics you will notice it is rooted in story telling, and I also narrate dramas about life; which alone makes me admire the likes of NAS, 2face among others.
RICKKY: Where can we find Tico and what are your likes and dislike?
TICO: You can find me in the studio or in my house, and I like straightforwardness and sincerity. While, I dislike lies and pretense.
RICKKY: They said almost 99% of rappers get high of drugs and all sort. What is your mix?
TICO: I don’t do drugs and I don’t smoke and also, drinking is not a habit. If you know what I mean.(giggles...)
RICKKY: Any last words for your fans?
TICO: Yeah, I have a lot of fans and I love them all for believing and trusting me. I pray for God’s protection upon their lives. Would always make myself available to them all, and I learn to respect them too because they are the one that is making Tico right now. I also have some die-hard fans who are always on my tab, traveling miles just to watch me perform. I really appreciate the likes of David, Samson, Mrs Obonyilo Sarah, Vivian, Linda... Walahi them plenty die, abeg you weh no hear your name no vex with me, I love wuna die! (Smile...)
RICKKY: It has been a pleasure having you around and we here at rickkyz.com wish to say a big thank you for granting us audience despite your tight schedule. Wishing you all the best in your career Mr Tico!
TICO: Thank you very much Bro! I really appreciate all the support....
